Christmas Joy

This past Sunday as we worked through Ecclesiastes 11, I was reminded that it is essential for the believer to walk through this live with joy. In fact, we should be the most joyful people around. The kind of joy I’m talking about is a joy that transcends our emotional state.

Biblical joy is best defined as “that deep sense of personal peace and encouragement whereby we realize that God’s purpose is to glorify Himself in us and bless us through Christ.” To put it more succinctly, joy is “the realization that God is blessing me for His own glory!” Even when facing difficult circumstances, struggles, trials, temptations, and distress, I am able to know that because of the accomplishment of Christ, God is going to bless me with grace through the various experiences of life.

In Luke 2, the angel announced to the Shepherds “I bring you good tidings of great joy.” The proclamation by the angel was the greatest news ever delivered to mankind. We continue in that great joy today. In fact, the relationship we have with Christ will produces great joy. Because of this relationship we know and continue to grow in joy.

Last December I provided a few activities that produce joy in the life of the believer. Here are a few additional examples of Biblical activities that foster joy in our lives.

◦ Serving the Lord brings joy — One of the greatest joys that you will ever experience comes through serving others in Christ. Serving the Lord brings gladness and joy to the Christian’s heart.

◦ Evangelizing brings joy — In my opinion there is nothing compared to being used by God to introduce a sinner to Jesus. Even hearing of new believers produces joy. Sharing the Gospel is a joyful experience as Christ is worthy of being exalted through our efforts.

◦ Thinking of the resurrection brings joy — It is important to realize that the struggles of this life are not final. As Christians our victory has been secured through the resurrection of Christ. This reality causes us to be joyful in any circumstance.

My prayer is that during this Christmas season you will know the joy that grows from a deep abiding relationship with Jesus.
