This past Sunday as we worked through Ecclesiastes 11, I was reminded that it is essential for the believer to walk through this live with joy. In fact, we should be the most joyful people around. The kind of joy I’m talking about is a joy that transcends our emotional state.
The Christmas season is a reminder that Jesus is our ultimate treasure and satisfaction. Unfortunately, sometimes we let our brokenness distract us from fully realizing the complete joy that is found in Him. Jesus proclaimed that one of the purposes of His coming was that we might have joy and that our “joy would be made full” (John 15:11). It
is apparent then, that our ability to have joy is directly connected to what Jesus did. When the angels announced Jesus’ birth, they declared: “I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). This Sunday we are going to explore the parable of the talents. This parable is found in Matthew 25:14-30 and is a perfect topic as we continue our Neighbor Series for the month of July. As you reflect on this parable you will quickly come to the issue of the spiritual gifts and talents that God gives to each person that follows Christ. I believe the talents in this parable point us to a healthy understanding of the grace-gifts that God gives to the church. Unfortunately many Christians are left asking the question ‘what are my gifts?’
This past Sunday we had the opportunity to work through Psalm 85 together. The question we considered from this text hits at the heart for many in our congregation: how do I move forward in faith when there is no joy? Several have expressed that the current season of life is one of lament. My prayer is that you were encouraged as you witnessed the model of the sons of Korah looking to God and asking for His help in times of trouble. Verse 6 of Psalm 85 is the central focus of the chapter.
