In 1991 Tom Corchane wrote the song Life is A Highway and in 2006 Rascal Flatts brought the song back to life when it became a hit song on the Walt Disney soundtrack for the movie Cars. At this point in my life my wife and were celebrating 15 years of marriage. Our kids were 9, 11, and 13. Reflecting over the years, there are two observations I have about life; life is a highway and it is extremely difficult!
Here is a simple reality that we have all know to be true; when belief and behavior do not align, we experience psychological tension. The scope of this tension is dependent on the level of disconnect between belief and behavior. Obviously greater disconnect produces even greater tension. Psychologist have created the term cognitive dissonance to describe the psychological discomfort a person encounters when belief and behavior are inconsistent. Often this inconsistency between belief and behavior results in anger, guilt, frustration and even embarrassment. Whereas much of the emphasis of modern psychology is to create harmony in self, the focus of Christianity and the biblical narrative is to establish harmony between God the creator and His creation.
![]() This upcoming week we are going to begin a new series call Psalms in the Key of Life! I am very excited to begin this study through a few selected Psalms over the next 8 weeks. The idea behind the sermon series is that our God prepares us and walks with us through every situation in life. God is our great sustainer and His mercy and compassion never fails. My prayer is that this series ignites a passion in our hearts to throw ourselves into the regular study of the Psalms and discover the depths of God’s great love for His people. I was reading an article this past week that suggest that less than 20% of people in America attend church on any given Sunday. As I read this article I thought to myself, “what do we offer people that do attend each week?” Do we offer uplifting music? An encouraging sermon? Prayer? Community? These are natural expectations but are they compelling enough to make church attendance a vital part of their lives
